POSITIONS IN COLLEGE GUIDANCE

New and growing, national educational non-profit devoted to supporting youth from underrepresented backgrounds seeks experienced College Guidance Advisors.

LEDA is a not-for-profit organization committed to developing the leadership potential of exceptional public high school juniors from socio-economic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds which are underrepresented at the country's leading colleges. By helping these students gain admission to such colleges, LEDA helps to equalize educational opportunity, thus expanding the nation's leadership resources to include all segments of the population.

The College Guidance Advisors will work closely with the senior management team to design and implement a comprehensive college guidance program consistent with LEDA’s mission. These positions will also help cement LEDA’s relationships with both high school counselors and college admissions personnel. College advisors are expected to work closely with the senior management team, as well as being able to work independently on agreed-upon projects.

It is expected that the College Advisors will help our Scholars compile college lists and meet college application requirements, assist with the financial aid application process, and advocate with college admissions officers. It is also expected that the Advisors will make recommendations and provide key information regarding college issues and trends to all staff.

Among the areas of responsibility of the College Advisors are:

• to develop and implement a series of college guidance information sessions;

• to assist each student in compiling an appropriate yet ambitious college list;

• to assist each student (in person, by phone, or by email) through each phase of the college application and financial aid process;

• to communicate with all parents through each phase of the college application and financial aid process;

• to assist each student in weighing his or her actual options (offers of admission);

• to develop means for students to visit the campuses of appropriate colleges in which they are interested (probably a combination of group visits and visits by individual students);

• to advocate on behalf of each LEDA college candidate with admissions officers at colleges deemed to be appropriate choices;

• to maintain records and data related to the college process for all LEDA students;

• to write comprehensive letters of recommendation for all LEDA Scholars for the colleges, universities, and scholarship programs on their lists;

• to collaborate with other staff to prepare students for interviews for college, internships, and scholarships;

• to continue to build coalitions in New York City and beyond with other college access programs and to represent LEDA locally and nationally at professional conferences when appropriate;

• to make ongoing recommendations to the senior management team in order to improve guidance counseling activities; and

• to play a significant role at the 2008 Summer Institute at Princeton University, requiring on-site residency for seven weeks.

The tasks listed above are intended only as a general framework of the responsibilities of these positions. As LEDA grows, flexibility is crucial and individuals should not perceive any job description as fixed.
