Our 2023 Career Institute, hosted at NYU School of Law, took place from August 5 through August 9. 96 newly minted LEDA Career Fellows representing 44 U.S. colleges explored career paths in a variety of industries and cultivated some of the skills needed to begin thriving as leaders in their careers. Career Fellows, who are generally rising sophomores, learned about both “hard” and “soft” professional skills, such as researching employment opportunities, writing résumés and cover letters, establishing a personal brand, interview etiquette, salary negotiation, identifying mentors, and networking. Career Fellows also had the opportunity to hear from LEDA Alumni, many of whom came from a comparable background, about issues that were more specific to under-resourced students, such as imposter syndrome and workplace culture shock.

LEDA once again worked with our employer partners to provide programming that introduced Career Fellows to specific industries, even including a first-hand look for partners with offices in New York City. We are grateful to this year’s employer partners for helping us make the Career Institute such a success: Standard Chartered; Amazon; Bloomberg LP; Boston Consulting Group; CPKC; Davidson Kempner Capital Management; Edelman; EY; Fortress; Goldman Sachs; HarperCollins; LEGO; Libra Group; Ropes & Gray; and the TJX Foundation.
LEDA Alumni are also integral to our ability to provide Career Fellows with insight into a broad spectrum of professional fields. Presenters this year included alums employed at companies such as MDRC, New York Presbyterian Hospital, Nasdaq, and the New York Times, and many of our industry panels were driven by LEDA Alumni, including those for education, healthcare, policy and the public sector, social impact, and STEM-field research.
With our Career Fellows back on their respective college campuses, LEDA is staying in contact via regular updates on opportunities for professional development and summer/full-time employment, as well as a standing offer for one-on-one advising sessions for students with more individualized questions. We are excited to support this new generation of young leaders as they begin their careers and shape the future of their fields!
